The object of the study is the structural changes in the education system and the labor market over the past 10-15 years, which may be associated with the beginning of the digital transformation of the economy. The article analyzes the dynamics of changes at different stages of educational activity in the country. Such changes include changes in the final certification of students, in the structure of admission to universities, in the employment of graduates, in the structure of employment by type of economic activity. The authors of the article try to find the correspondence of these changes with the beginning of the industrial revolution. The study concluded that the education system is not ready for the new challenges of the digital economy, which is reflected in the imbalance of the students subjects exam with the principles of the digital economy. The study concluded that the unavailability of the overall education system to new challenges of the digital economy, which is reflected in the imbalance of the students subjects exam with the principles of the digital economy, in non-conformity of the market of educational services with the tasks of the digital economy, in low level of employment of graduates in the specialty, in non-conformity of the structure of those employed in the digital economy, and the insufficient development of retraining centers. The authors propose a number of mechanisms to solve these problems, one of which is associated with the introduction of scientifically based methods of forecasting the need for personnel for the new economy
