The article considers the possibility of the Northern sea route to become an international transit route. The analysis of the competitiveness of the Northern sea route in comparison with the South Sea Route through the Suez Canal has been carried out. The article shows that in order to be competitive, large investments are needed, and mainly, in the development of ports and port infrastructure, so that they comply with modern world standards
