Indian Institute of Technology: Taking the challenge of international rankings

The author investigates issues, faced by Indian Institutes of Technology, and outlines perspectives for their future development. Since their establishment these institutes have been considered the most prestigious in India, in terms of higher technical education. At present, though, it becomes more obvious that IITs need to revise their strategies, in order to remain nationally and internationally competitive, as well as to improve their positions in world rankings. Besides, IITs should continue contributing to sustainable economic growth in India, by providing knowledge and skills that the country is desperately in need of.
