A typology of innovation in professional sport

This paper addresses the distinctive features of innovations in professional sports as well as attempts to propose a typology of innovation based on the derived industry-specific peculiarities. It was established that based on the aim of innovation we can highlight sport (based on utility maximization) and economic (based on profit maximization) innovations. Using the ten types of innovation concept several case studies of implementing innovations in professional sport were reviewed. As a result, economic goals can be achieved using all ten types of innovations, whilst sports results can be enhanced only by three types of innovations. All of these innovations fall into the category of organizational configuration: network, structure and process
