This article deals with the definition of an entrepreneurial university, its characteristics and evolution of this phenomenon. The author analyzes research results of foreign experts and articulates the current vision of this institution’s role in national and regional social and economic development. The article provides methods and tools which can be used by entrepreneurial universities for self- assessment of their performance. Universities of the Association of Entrepreneurial Universities of Russia are taken as an example for the Russian Federation.
