Geographical indications: new opportunities for local producers

In 2019, a new type of intellectual property was introduced into the Russian legal system. Geographical indications (GI) give the right to use toponyms and elements associated with a certain territory for the purpose of individualizing goods and services. GI holders can use both the special qualities and the reputation of the place of origin of goods to promoting them. The article is devoted to the analysis of the legal nature of GIs, the key aspects of their registration and the benefits that right holders receive.

Keywords: Geographical Indications (GI), Appelations of Origin of Goods (AOG), no exclusive rights for GI and AOG, legal protection for local brands, special features of the goods.
