Imitation is an effective tool of diminishing technology gaps and developing own innovation capabilities of companies in emerging markets, e.g. Russia, China, Brazil etc. The papers contains a review of theoretical approaches to imitation-based strategies, explains most-cited types of imitation strategies and objects of imitation. Benefits and limitations of imitation strategy application are also discussed. An application model of imitation strategy for Russian companies is a main outcome of the paper.
